Got an error using your template, so I just used a default amazon template and it worked (the first template url we had to provide, not the bucket one).

I couldn't access the EC-2 instance. The instance was running and had appropriate security group inbound rules. I tried from my laptop as well as another server. I could connect to other AWS EC-2 instances, just not the one in this lab.

The only issue I see that may effect others is that it assumes earlier that the user knows vi. Fortunately, I'm fluent.
